I have often heard people discuss Social Media in terms of technology – Facebook, Twitter, Blogs and Wikis. I think this few is too limiting. Social Media is more of a phenomenon of the changing ways in which people can communicate. Social Media equal impacts the in person conversation, written letters and traditional media as much as it impacts electronic communications.
With this as a preference I propose an experiment involving the postal service. This past month I have enjoyed watching the NCAA Final Four Tournament. It is everything a post season should be – upsets, victories and defeats. The final game came down to the last shot. So why isn’t College Football a similar way?
The topic has been debated quite a bit in the past few years. It has even gone as far as the Presidency and Congress. The discussion needs to be at the NCAA not through the courts or legislation. And how best to get your voice heard? It isn’t through email, blogs or postings. Those are easy to tune out. It is through written letter. Whatever your view point on the matter we need to write the NCAA.
The experiment is how many people will write? Will people take the time, effort and the cost of stamp? Does Social Media extend beyond the ease of posting something to MySpace and actually enter all facets of communication. I believe that it does.
If you believe the same do please do two things. 1) let your social network know about this message. 2) write NCAA interim president James L. Isch and let him know your thoughts on post season college athletics.

The measurement of the experiement will be through seeing where this is posted, the amount of retweets, and the amount of traffic this generates. But in the end the ultimate measurement of the success or failure of this experiment is if the number of letters is commented on by the NCAA.
